Amazon’s fantasy series Wheel of Time might be gearing up to release its first season in November, but work is progressing behind the scenes on the show’s second season. According to Deadline, the studio has hired Empire director Sanaa Hamri to helm half of the show’s second season, and she’ll also serve as one of the season’s executive producers.

Amazon has been working on the series for a while, and just released its first teaser trailer for the upcoming first season earlier this month. That season is set to debut on November 19th, and when it does, it’ll be set in a “Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it.” The show will follow a woman named Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), the member of an all-woman magical group called the Aes Sedaia as she sets off on a world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of which might be a prophesied destroyer or savior of humanity.

The studio has been planning for a second season for a while, and officially announced the renewal back in May 2021, shortly after production on season one concluded. In a statement at the time, showrunner and creator Rafe Judkins noted that “getting a second season order before the first season has even premiered is such a vote of confidence in the work we are doing and the property itself,” and that “Season 2 just keeps expanding the world we built in Season 1.”

Hamri will take part in that construction. The Moroccan-American filmmaker has helmed three feature films (Something New, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, and Just Wright), as well as work on shows like Nashville, Hemlock Grove, Empire (where she also served as executive producer), American Horror Stories, and a number of others. There’s no word on when the season season will begin production, but it sounds as though work is starting to ramp up.
